After-Birth Abortion

Dear brothers & sisters,

Here it comes . . .
After-Birth Abortion

A group of medical ethicists associated with Oxford University recently published an article in the Journal of Medical Ethics in which they make a moral case for “after-birth abortion.”

Their argument is that newborn babies are not “actual persons” and thus do not have a “moral right to life.” They are “potential” persons, not “actual” persons.

The article states: “We take ‘person’ to mean an individual who is capable of attributing to her own existence some (at least) basic value such that being deprived of this existence represents a loss to her.”

The ethicists go on to suggest that after-birth abortion is particularly advisable in the case of a disabled child, who presents “an unbearable burden on the family and society as a whole.” However, after-birth abortion is morally permissible in any case.

Are you surprised?
