A Report on Children & Youth Ministries

posted Oct 4, 2013, 10:43 AM by First Baptist

We were blessed last Sunday to be able to present Bibles to our kindergarteners, as well as to a few older kids who are relatively new to the church.

As Grace Curren mentioned in her remarks, having a Bible is a great privilege (in many countries it’s illegal), and with great privilege comes great responsibility. She is exactly right!

I appreciate our church’s commitment to children & youth ministry. Here is what I’m seeing:

JAM & Jr. JAM

This year-old ministry for children through 5th grade is going extremely well. The two groups meet during the “sermon time” of the 10:30 (contemporary) service. The children then re-join their parents during the closing song. JAM & Jr JAM enable our young children to worship God on their level. The ministry also allows their parents to listen to the adult sermon without distraction.

Jr High/Sr High Sunday School

This class is led by Jim & Jan Swensen and it meets during the 9:00 (traditional) service.

Jr High Small Group

Rich & Mary Freml lead a small group in their home on Friday evenings. They have a meal together, study God’s Word and pray for each other. This is the 2nd year this group has met.

Elementary BYF

BYF is off to a great start this year. The elementary directors – Laurel Klitgaard & John Gilliland – have introduced a new curriculum and new schedule. In addition, 6th graders have been divided into a boys group & girls group, with a special emphasis on preparing them for their teen years.

Jr High/Sr High BYF

Jim & Jan Swensen direct our jr high/senior high ministry and have assembled a wonderful team of leaders. They have a new curriculum this year and follow a slightly different format. The evening begins, of course, with an awesome meal prepared by volunteers from the church.

In summary, our children & youth ministries are going extremely well, and we’re blessed to have so many kids. We’re also blessed with a faithful, competent and committed volunteer staff, who truly love the Lord & love the kids.

Our long-range plan is for every jr & sr high student to have the opportunity to participate in a small group. You see, for all the strengths of our flagship programs (and the strengths are many), they lack something very important: personal mentoring & accountability. This is what the disciples had when they walked with Jesus and those 11 men went on to change the world.

With appreciation,

Pastor Dan
