For a change of pace this week, I would like to address the subject of our PHYSICAL health.
Yesterday, I was at HyVee and ran into 2 church members within about a minute of each other. In both cases, I inquired about their spouse, and both immediately expressed concern about their spouse’s physical condition & well-being.
With one of the spouses, it is mostly a matter of the natural deterioration of the human body, while with the other, there was concern about their diet and lack of exercise.
Because of sin’s curse, at about age 18, our body begins to deteriorate, until eventually, it perishes. When it does, it is placed in the ground until Christ resurrects it. This is the natural course of things. But while this is taking place, God doesn’t want us to be passive; instead, He wants us to take care of our body and be as productive as possible.
The Bible goes even further. It says our body is a temple (where God resides), and as such, requires a high degree of care and respect. The key verses are I Corinthians 3:16-17:
Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple [by not caring for it], God will destroy him; for God’s temple is sacred, and you are that temple.
Pretty strong language, I must say! At the very least, it’s saying that it is a sin not to take care of one’s body. It can be likened to sneaking into the church late at night and destroying & defacing the worship area.
The proper care of our body involves three things: (1) a good diet; (2) regular exercise; and (3) adequate rest. All three are necessary, and unfortunately, none of them is easy in today’s culture.
If you’re struggling in any of these three areas (or maybe in all of them), don’t expect a sudden and dramatic turn-around. Instead, choose one and make small improvements. Then, move on to other areas.
Fifteen years ago, I weighed over 200 pounds and was tired all the time. I finally got tired of being tired, and I decided to take up running. The 1st morning, I could only run about a block before I was doubled over and coughing up junk from my lungs. It was actually quite comical. But, I kept at it. The 2nd day, I ran a block and a half; the 3rd day, two blocks. You get the point. Today, I can easily run several miles (although undoubtedly my knees will ache).
The Wellness Center is a tremendous resource in our community; not only the machines, track and pool, but the expertise that’s available. I took a nutrition class several months ago and, by reducing the fat in my diet, was able to lose 17 pounds.
As we head into the fall season, this is a great time to evaluate our care of “God’s temple” and make some adjustments. May God lead and bless you as you do.
