Science Increasingly Makes the Case for God

There was a wonderful article in last Saturday’s Wall Street Journal by Eric Metaxas.

In 1966, Time magazine ran a cover story asking: Is God Dead? The thinking was, as science progresses, there is less need for a “God” to explain the universe.

It turns out that the rumors of God’s death were premature!

The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence

Also in 1966, the astronomer Carl Sagan announced that there were two important criteria for a planet to support life: The right kind of a star, and a planet the right distance from that star.

Given that there are about 1 octillion stars in the universe (1 followed by 27 zeros) and even more planets, Sagan said that necessarily means there are billions upon billions of planets in the universe capable of supporting life.

This led to creation of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), a consortium of private and publicly funded projects dedicated to finding life on other planets. They searched for 30 years, spending billions of dollars.

And what did the SETI find? Zippo. Not a single planet in the universe capable of supporting life.

As time went on, scientists kept adding to the criteria necessary for a planet to support life. In 1962, there were only 2 criteria; today, there are more than 200 known parameters necessary for a planet to support life – every single one of which must be perfectly met, or the whole thing falls apart.

Bottom Line

Scientists now acknowledge the odds of life on other planets are infinitely small. Thus, the fact there IS life (on Earth) argues very strongly for the existence of a Being who designed it all.

Fred Hoyle, the astronomer who coined the term “big bang,” said that his atheism was “greatly shaken” by these developments. He later wrote that “a common-sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a super-intellect has monkeyed with the physics, as well as with the chemistry and biology . . . The numbers ones calculates from the facts seem to me so overwhelming as to  put this conclusion almost beyond question.”

Of course, we know this “Super-Intellect” to be the God of the Bible, who not only created us, but loves us.

Happy New Year!
