Shop ‘Til You Drop

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Sally, Mandy and I were able to spend Thanksgiving in St. Paul with my side of the family.

After turkey, it was time to watch some football, while our nieces and nephews went to the Mall of America. Several of them shopped from Thursday evening until 5:30 the next morning!

Later that day, they were excited to show us their purchases and to tell us of the great “deals” they got at this-or-that store. What I guess surprised me was the fact that virtually 100% of their purchases were for themselves. Of course, this isn’t necessarily wrong or sinful, but I think it illustrates our innate tendency toward selfishness. It appears that much of our Christmas giving has evolved into giving first to ourselves, with others getting the leftovers.

Hebrews 13:6 reminds us: “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”

This Sunday, we have the opportunity to please God through our giving toward the Haiti mission trip. Bob Kitchen will be here from Wichita to explain this years’ project. Please come prepared to listen to God and then to respond to His Spirit through the sacrifice of giving.
