The Church in an Age of Crisis

“From the tribe of Issachar, there were 200 leaders . . . All these men understood the signs of the times and knew the best course for Israel to take” (I Chron 12:32, NLT).

Do you ever find yourself confused and maybe even despairing a bit over the state of our world today? I do.

Sometimes my despair is more than just a little bit. Just this past week, I was saddened to learn that the Boy Scouts will soon allow homosexual men to serve as Scout leaders. I was also saddened to hear our President declare on national television “of course the government needs more tax revenue.” Translation: The problem, as he sees it, is that we’re not being taxed enough.

Finally, I read an article that listed the top iTunes downloads from a recent week. Are you ready? Here they are:

§  F**kin’ Perfect – by Pink

§  Born This Way – by Lady Gaga (supporting homosexuality)

§  F**k You – by Cee Lo Green

§  Tonight – by Enrique Iglesias (encouraging promiscuity)

§  Hey Baby – by Pitbull (encouraging promiscuity)

§  S & M – by Rihanna (promoting aberrant sexual behavior)

Like the tribe of Issachar, we need to understand “the times” in which we live and respond appropriately.

A book I’ve found particularly helpful is entitled “The Church in an Age of Crisis” by James Emery White. In his book, Dr. White describes 25 “currents” running through our culture. I believe these 25 currents go a long way in explaining what is going on. He divides them into 5 categories of 5 currents each. The categories are:

Marriage & Family

Media & Technology

Over the next 5 weeks, I will attempt to summarize the 25 currents – category by category. My thinking is, unless we UNDERSTAND our culture, we will be ILL-EQUIPPED to live in it and make the KIND OF DIFFERENCE that our King wants us to make.

Until next week . . .
