Wouldn’t It Be Nice?

Despite lukewarm reviews, Justice League continues to be the “hot” movie in America and around the world. The movie cost $300 million to produce, so it better be popular.

For the uninitiated, the Justice League is a team of superheroes that forms following the death of Superman to save the planet from the supervillain Steppenwolf. The superhero team is comprised of Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg.

I’m not a fan of this movie genre, but I was certainly interested in something that Ben Affleck said recently while promoting the movie. (He plays the part of Batman.) As quoted by USA Today, Mr. Affleck said:

“Part of the appeal of this genre is wish fulfillment: Wouldn’t it be nice if there was somebody who can save us from all this, save us from ourselves, save us from the consequences of our actions, and save us from people who are evil?”

Yes, indeed, wouldn’t it be nice.

As Christians, we understand this to be a universal cry – to be saved from “all this.”

What is particularly striking to me is how this famous Hollywood actor mentions the longing to be saved “from the consequences of our actions.” Clearly, he’s referring to what the Bible calls “sin.” What isn’t clear is whether he’s only thinking about temporal consequences, or eternal ones.

I think this comment by Mr. Affleck represents both our opportunity & challenge as the church of Jesus Christ.

The opportunity is that people are yearning for salvation. There seems to be a growing awareness that something is wrong with us as human beings and it’s something we can’t fix on our own; we need outside help, so to speak.

The challenge is that, at the same time, there seems to be a lack of awareness that Christianity provides the solution to every person’s greatest & deepest need.

“Wouldn’t it be nice if there was somebody…?”

There is! There is! His name is Jesus.
